An Order is an honour granted to an individual normally for loyalty and service for civil or military achievement, by a Head of State in the form of an insignia (and a possible title that may be sub sequentially be used to address the recipient). Orders can also given as a symbol of friendship between two Heads of State, or given by one Head of State of one country to an individual of another in gratitude or honour.

A decoration is normally a medal which is awarded for gallantry or for distinguished service, for civilian or military service, which entitles the individual to use the initials for that decoration after their name.

Medals are often issued for military campaigns or for recognition of civilian duties such as in the Probation, Fire, Police and Heath services. They can also be awarded at significant times for example for HM Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee which was awarded in 2012.
